Wednesday.. trailer loading
On Wednesday, we started off the morning with trailer loading. Berin had us play with our horses and warm up, prepare them for trailer loading. He had us stand at a cone, about 30 feet or so from the trailer and we had 3 sends (or tries) to get them in the trailer. I learned quite a bit in this session. When I asked Max to back up, he had no respect for me. When I asked him to go to the trailer, he did not even think about the trailer. Wow.. I knew I was missing something here. I had NO respect whatsoever! So after I attempted to load him in the trailer, I went into the arena and worked on his back up and disengaging. I would ask lightly for him to back up, then go to phase 4, then back to phase 1.. soon he was backing up much better! And his draw improved greatly! I learned to prepare him appropriately for what we wanted to do and most importantly that I needed to gain so much more respect with him to get anywhere with him.
